Period Poverty continues to be a pandemic across the world, despite the many efforts made by government, NGOs, the private sector and community members. Access to menstrual products, lack of safe and hygienic spaces and stigmas and stereotypes associated with having periods remains a challenge.
Even though we still have a long way to go to eradicate this problem, we as the Be Good, Do Good Foundation would like to join thousands of organizations and individuals who have made efforts to reduce period poverty.
Young girls have felt a sense of embarrassment simply because they were on their period and have experienced period-shaming. The fear of stigmatization, along with limited access to menstrual hygiene supplies, has negatively affected girls’ school attendance and performance.
We would like to introduce you to our annual Menstrual Hygiene campaign taking place on August 2021. We aim this campaign at assisting 100 girls between the ages of 11 – 13 from disadvantaged communities (from Kwanala Primary School and Bonginhlanhla Primary School). Through this campaign, we will donate sanitary pads, panty liners, soap, a cloth, wipes, a hot water bottle and a menstrual cycle diary and tracker. We will also collaborate with nurses to educate the girls about the changes their bodies go through during this time, how to understand their cycles and to talk about, as well as break stereotypes associated with having your periods.
We are working closely with the teachers and principles from Kwanala Primary School (Kriel Mine) and Bonginhlanhla Primary School (Thubelihle Township) to ensure that we facilitate the campaign successfully, while ensuring that we do not interfere with school academic activities and that adhere to the COVID regulations.
We would really appreciate your support in ensuring the success of this campaign. Please visit our website and social media pages to find out how you can donate, volunteer and work together with us to eradicate period poverty!
